On 18th and 19th November 2024, KCDF in collaboration with the East African Philanthropy Network, Tanzania Community Foundation, and Civsource Africa hosted a comprehensive training session on Strengthening Community Foundations for Sustainable Impact. The forum assembled various organizations from Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, and Uganda; with 13 of them being KCDF’s community foundation partners.
Key discussions during the sessions revolved around strengthening adaptive capacity, integrating global and local agendas, enhancing strategic partnerships, expanding technological and analytical capabilities, promoting sustainable resource management, and cultivating leadership and governance excellence.
Kennedy Odera, KCDF’s Programme Coordinator for Capacity Building and Systems Strengthening speaking at the event on how the community foundations can plug into local resource mobilisation.
This was triggered by the global challenges encountered by local communities such as;
· Environmental degradation
· Social fragmentation
· Economic volatility
These organizations must transition from traditional, often insular, funding mechanisms to become leaders in sustainability and resilience. This evolution is critical for the survival and prosperity of local communities and for the global community’s collective aim to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The strategic enhancement of community foundations is operationally an upgrade and a fundamental rethinking of their potential to influence and drive meaningful, lasting change. This holistic, forward-thinking approach will equip them to lead with innovative solutions that are as locally adapted as they are globally informed, ensuring a sustainable future for all.
While community foundations have long been instrumental in addressing immediate local needs, there is growing recognition that they must evolve into strategic leaders for long-term resilience.
Among the key takeaway insights from the sessions were:
- Community foundations should prioritize building strategic relationships to enhance their impact within the communities they serve.
- They must aim to convene stakeholders to gather insights on local challenges and collaboratively identify sustainable solutions.
- It is crucial to align goals with partners when seeking funding opportunities, while also exploring synergies to maximize collective impact.
- Building strong relationships with local businesses is essential, not only to promote community-based work but also to support partners in their efforts.
- Community foundations should focus on developing long-term relationships. Where possible, entering into long-term agreements or partnerships with donors can provide stability.
- As the donor landscape continues to shrink, organizations must consider local fundraising as an effective and sustainable alternative.
- To reduce dependency on foreign aid, community foundations should prioritize resource diversification and seek alternative funding sources.
- Embrace technology and foster cross-sector alliances to strengthen community foundations’ capacity to address both local and global challenges.
Community foundations play a crucial role as trusted local actors, with the potential to drive widespread impact and influence sustainable development agendas. Through continuous investment in these foundations, we not only fund community initiatives but also build the frameworks for community-led innovation capable of adapting to a rapidly changing world.
