On 4th and 5th December 2024, KCDF held a Social Enterprise Development Fund training conducted by SME Support Centre which was geared towards equipping 12 CSOs with the capacity to generate income for their organizations to steer development, sustainability, and ascertain financial resilience.
The Social Enterprise Coaching focused on the basics of social enterprises, Legal and regulatory considerations for setting up SEs, practical working sessions on financial planning and management, impact management, and development of investment strategies.
Through capacity development and long-term collaborations with governments, non-profit organizations, and the private sector, KCDF empowers communities to drive development agendas with minimal external support, ensuring lasting social justice.

Speaking at the training, our Executive Director, Grace Maingi, underscored the need for CSOs to be independent and to find ways of generating income to be sustainable without overreliance on donor funding. She highlighted that KCDF envisions a future where CSOs move beyond traditional fundraising models by engaging in social enterprises that generate flexible, unrestricted income. These ventures will enable CSOs to fund their charitable activities while building long-term business sustainability.

KCDF is a key partner in the East Africa Financial Resilience Resource Hub (FRRH), a collaborative five-year program with organizations in Tanzania and Uganda. This initiative supports diverse civil society actors in the Global South, enhancing their capacity to build resilient, impactful institutions. The program emphasizes financial resilience through sustainable resource generation and management, particularly for organizations focused on social justice.
To support this transformation, KCDF is offering tailored training for CSOs to develop the necessary skills for establishing and managing social enterprises.

The 2-day training extensively covered essential topics such as income-generating activities (IGAs), social enterprise models, financial management, tax compliance, enterprise registration, and risk management. Through these efforts, KCDF empowered partner CSOs to diversify their income streams, ensuring greater financial resilience and enabling them to continue their vital work in community development.
