At just 17 years old, Delvine Lopez, a student at Katilu Girls High School, carries dreams far bigger than the challenges she has faced. Born visually impaired and raised in northern Turkana by a single mother with no stable income, Delvine grew up enduring hardship more than many of her age mates. Yet, despite the odds, her resolve has never wavered.
Her life changed the day she received a phone call confirming that she had been awarded a scholarship through the KCDF Education Scholarship Programme, funded by the Chandaria Foundation.
“I was very happy when I was informed that I got the scholarship,” she recalled. “It gave me a huge sigh of relief. I knew my school life would be simpler and less stressful. Now I could finally focus on my studies without all the struggles.”
For 18 years now, the Chandaria Foundation has been working closely with KCDF and other partners to transform the lives of underprivileged children through the Chandaria Foundation Education Scholarship. The scholarship opportunity was made available through the Northern Nomadic Disabled Persons’ Organisation (NONDO), which connected Delvine to KCDF after learning about her situation.
NONDO is dedicated to advocating for persons with disabilities from nomadic communities.
Through advocacy, media engagement, inclusive sports, and legal support, the organisation works to ensure children like Delvine are not left behind, especially when it comes to education.
At school, Delvine’s commitment has not gone unnoticed. Her teacher, Mr. Jeremiah, speaks of her with pride and admiration,”Delvine is very dedicated, disciplined, and hardworking. Coming from such a humble background, this scholarship was a timely blessing that allowed her to continue with her education. Her results have been exemplary, and we believe she will perform well in her final exams.”
Because she lives far from school, the administration ensures she gets safe transportation every term. They also provide basic necessities to keep her comfortable and focused on her academics. With the support she has received, Delvine’s dreams have grown even brighter.
“I hope to pass my examinations so I can join university,” she says confidently. “I want to become a nurse and also pursue piloting in aviation school. Just as KCDF and Chandaria Foundation have supported me, I also want to support students in my community to access good education.”
From the remote corners of Northern Turkana to the hallways of Katilu Girls High School, Delvine’s journey is a powerful reminder of the potential that blossoms when opportunity meets determination. Her journey demonstrates how access to the right support can transform a young life, enabling talent and determination to flourish, regardless of the challenges faced.
KCDF, working together with other partners such as the Chandaria Foundation, continues to shape the dreams of deserving students from underprivileged backgrounds, helping them pursue education.
The Chandaria Foundation is one of the oldest charity organisations in Kenya, having been founded by the Chandaria Family in 1955, with its key objectives being to help the less fortunate members of society in Education, Health, Arts and culture and supporting projects that the trustees see as playing an innovative or leadership role in Kenya’s development.
To date, the Chandaria Foundation, through its partnership with KCDF, has disbursed a total of KES 46,569,825, supporting more than 549 students on their educational journeys. In 2024, the Chandaria Foundation donated KES 3.2 million to KCDF towards supporting the education scholarship programme.
