In a region where many women struggle to provide for their families, especially those who are widowed or single mothers, hope and empowerment have found new meaning through the Kakamega County Widows Empowerment Project (KCWEP). Founded in 2016, KCWEP has been supporting vulnerable women, offering them a chance to rise above the socio-economic challenges that they face. Widows, single mothers, and teen mothers in this community have long fought against the odds to provide their families with a better life. Still, financial constraints and lack of access to resources have made their journeys even harder.
A pivotal moment for KCWEP came when they participated in the Local Fundraising and Sustainability Training provided by KCDF through Change the Game Academy. This transformative training gave KCWEP the tools and strategies needed to create sustainable funding sources. Armed with knowledge of local fundraising, KCWEP quickly began exploring ways to generate income to support its mission of empowering widows and marginalised women in Kakamega County.
With the skills gained from the training, KCWEP launched an ambitious income-generating project—a farm on a quarter-acre of land. The farm now features a modern fishpond, a tree nursery that can grow 50,000 seedlings, a greenhouse producing 1,300 tomato stems, and an open field for garlic cultivation. This initiative has become a lifeline, with an estimated return on investment of Kes 3,000,000 monthly. It’s a thriving source of food, income, and opportunity for local women who once had little to no financial independence.
Beyond the tangible outcomes of increased food security and improved nutrition, this project has contributed to real change within households. Women who once struggled to make ends meet are now in control of their financial futures. They are learning sustainable farming techniques that not only provide for their families but also teach them valuable skills to pass on to others. The project has become a training ground, empowering local communities and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the farm.
The success of this initiative is a vivid indicator of the power of Change the Game Academy’s training. Through KCDF’s support, KCWEP was able to unlock its potential and create lasting change for the women of Kakamega County. With plans to expand the farm and introduce poultry production, KCWEP is paving the way for even greater success, providing both income and training for more families.
KCWEP’s story is a powerful reminder that with the right tools and knowledge, communities can break free from cycles of poverty and build resilient, self-sustaining futures. Thanks to the partnership between KCDF and KCWEP, widows and women in Kakamega County are now empowered to take control of their lives, shape their destinies, and inspire future generations.
