CTGA Refresher Training: Sharpening Trainers as Agents of Sustainable Growth

On 13th March 2025, KCDF, in partnership with ZepRe Insurance, launched the fourth cohort of the MENTENDA mentorship programme at Highway Secondary School in Nairobi, Kenya.
The programme is founded on the principle that men must take the lead in preparing adolescent boys and young men for the challenges of adulthood. This includes assuming key roles such as parenting, community leadership, business stewardship, and politics, among other forms of leadership.
The short- to medium-term outcomes anticipated from the MENTENDA mentorship programme include improved academic performance, enhanced discipline, higher transition rates through the education system, stronger community connections, a culture of volunteerism, and increased opportunities for career and life skills development.
Ms. Irene Kirande, the school’s Head of Guidance and Counselling, urged students to approach the mentorship sessions with open minds, explaining that the programme is an extension of the life skills they are already learning.
Madam Esther Mwaura, the Deputy Principal, reiterated the importance of the mentorship sessions for the students and the school.
“We deeply appreciate the efforts of KCDF and ZepRe for launching the fourth cohort of the mentorship programme at our school. We have witnessed significant improvements in student behaviour and academic performance from the three previous cohorts. The programme has also contributed greatly to upgrading our school facilities. Through ZepRe’s CSR, we received tents and chairs, which have enhanced the learning environment. The mentorship programme plays a critical role in shaping our students’ life skills, empowering them to handle life’s challenges with confidence,” Ms. Mwaura emphasised.
The teachers also committed to ensuring students remain punctual and dedicated to attending the sessions.
Mr. Caesar Ngule, KCDF’s Programme Director, thanked the school for its continued support in hosting the mentorship programme and encouraged students to be discerning during the sessions and make the most of the valuable lessons shared.
“We are grateful that Highway Secondary School has trusted us with the responsibility of running the mentorship programme over the past three cohorts. I urge the students to be attentive and discerning. While mentorship is key, sometimes, as peers, you may be tempted to guide each other. It’s important to evaluate what you choose to adopt in your life carefully,” Caesar explained.
“Since joining this programme as a mentor, I can say that I have become a better father because I now understand both perspectives: that of a parent and that of a child,” Alexio shared.
“I encourage you to be engaged in the sessions and open to sharing your challenges. We, as mentors, are also eager to learn from you. Remember, a shared problem is half solved,” Simon added.
With the launch of the fourth cohort, the school’s teachers have noted significant improvements in student character, performance, and overall behaviour. The students are now more disciplined, listen attentively to instructions, and exhibit less disruptive behaviour.
KCDF remains committed to expanding these mentorship sessions to build resilient and flourishing communities.
