On June 10 and 11, 2025, KCDF conducted a Change the Game Academy (CtGA) refresher training for 12 organisations from across Kenya supported by Misereor to enhance their capacity to mobilise local resources for sustainable community development.
Facilitated by two experienced CtGA trainers, the session covered practical fundraising strategies such as donor profiling, effective communication, and articulating organisational impact. It allowed participants to reflect on previous efforts and learn from each other’s successes and challenges.
Building Confidence in Fundraising
KCDF’s Head of Partnership and Resource Development, Purity Murugu, urged participants to approach fundraising with confidence:
“Please remember that when you reach out to partners, you are not begging—but seeking help for a good cause.”
She highlighted key strategies, including using board networks, leveraging communication tools, and recognising even the smallest donations:
“No amount is too little. Accept what you’re given and use it well—doing so may open doors to greater support.”
Peer Learning in Action
Participants appreciated the opportunity to reflect and grow. Bernard Osewe, Animator at Chikwoyo Network Development Initiative, shared:
“I’ve refreshed my knowledge and gained new insights from my peers. We discussed the challenges we faced and how to refine our strategies. We are now better equipped to fundraise successfully at the local level.”
Sharpening the Pitch
An essential part of the refresher training was a session on how to pitch effectively. Participants were guided on how to structure and deliver a clear, compelling request within a short period—an important skill when engaging potential donors or partners.
They practised pitching with an emphasis on confidence, clarity, and aligning their ask with the interests and values of the audience. The goal: win trust, convey impact, and secure support.
Key Takeaways:
- Use social media strategically to promote your cause and attract supporters.
- Research donor interests to tailor your pitch and communication.
- Clearly communicate your unique value proposition and mission.
- Define your funding needs and the impact your work creates.
- Align your work with donor priorities to build lasting partnerships.
- Master your pitch—be concise, confident, and clear in your ask.
Conclusion
The refresher training reinforced a vital truth: local fundraising is achievable when approached with the right mindset, tools, and strategy. With renewed skills and the power of peer learning, these 12 organisations are now better positioned to confidently engage supporters and drive lasting change in their communities.
