Webinar Recap: Community-led Organising for Sustainable Development – The KCDF Story
April 23, 2025
KCDF hosted Robert White the Executive Director of the Tilitonse Foundation based in Malawi, for a knowledge exchange and learning visit. This engagement formed part of a broader initiative to promote collaboration and mutual learning among African community foundations. The visit offered a valuable opportunity to deepen his understanding of KCDF’s operational model and holistic approach to building flourishing and resilient communities across Kenya.
Established in 2016, the Tilitonse Foundation is a private company limited by guarantee that is committed to promoting accountable and inclusive governance in Malawi. The foundation strengthens the capacity of civil society organisations (CSOs) and community-based organisations (CBOs), providing them with a platform to advance inclusivity, transparency, accountability, and responsiveness in governance.
During the visit, KCDF and Tilitonse Foundation exchanged valuable insights on community-led development, local philanthropy, and sustainable capacity-building strategies. The engagement served as a meaningful platform for cross-learning, reinforcing a shared mission to promote grassroots-driven transformation and locally led development across the continent.
Present in the meeting was Hellen Kuria, Community Voices and Philanthropy Coordinator; Mary Mwangi, Partnership and Resource Mobilisation Coordinator; Eunice Muyoka, Investment Officer at ADAPO; David Muo, Monitoring and Evaluation Officer; and Elly Oindo, Livelihoods, Environment, and Natural Resources Management Programmes Officer. The team shared KCDF’s experiences in mobilising resources through local and international networks to support community initiatives. They also elaborated on the foundation’s transparent grant disbursement processes grounded in strong principles and community engagement.
The visit underscored the importance of peer learning and collaboration among African community foundations, highlighting the potential of shared knowledge in addressing common development challenges. It also reaffirmed the strong alignment between KCDF and the Tilitonse Foundation in their commitment to empowering communities and strengthening local governance systems.
