June 3, 2025On May 26th and 27th, 2025, KCDF convened a Joint Financial and Narrative Reporting Workshop in Nairobi, bringing together 17 partner organisations under the support of the Mott Foundation and the East Africa Resilience Resource Hub (FRRH). The workshop was designed to enhance partners’ capacity in financial sustainability, community foundation development, reporting practices, and impact-driven programming. It kicked off with an in-depth exploration of the concept and role of community foundations in promoting locally led development.
Mr. Caesar Ngule, KCDF’s Programmes Director, welcomed the partner organisations to the workshop and expressed his appreciation for their presence. He highlighted the importance of the gathering, noting that,
“We’ve had many conversations about what truly matters—and this one is particularly important because it’s about empowering you to become self-reliant. As the funding landscape continues to shift, it’s crucial that you learn how to mobilise your own resources. You need to be clear about the kind of impact you want to achieve, the indicators you will track, and how you communicate that impact in real time. Think about what builds trust with your communities and what makes you an effective community foundation. It’s also important to recognise that foundations can and should explore the establishment of social enterprises as a path to sustainability.”
Kennedy Odera, KCDF’s Programmes Coordinator in charge of Capacity and Systems Strengthening, highlighted KCDF’s commitment to nurturing more community foundations across Kenya. He emphasised that placing communities at the centre of development initiatives remains a core tenet of KCDF’s mission.
“KCDF envisions building strong, autonomous organisations that can spearhead community development and sustain their work beyond donor support,” Mr. Odera remarked. “Through the support of our partners, we are working to develop resilient social enterprises that not only ensure financial independence but also drive long-term community impact.”
Another focal point of the workshop was equipping organisations with tools and frameworks for Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E). David Muo, KCDF’s M&E Officer, led a comprehensive session that introduced participants to the fundamentals of results-based management. He emphasized the importance of having a clear results chain—from inputs and activities to outputs, outcomes, and impact.
Mr. Muo further guided the partners on how to develop a robust Theory of Change—a vital planning tool that links interventions with desired results, and helps organisations assess both short- and long-term achievements. Establishing effective MEL systems, he noted, is critical for evidence-based reporting and adaptive learning.
On the second day, Hillary Langat, KCDF’s Finance Assistant, alongside other Finance Officers, guided the partners on the correct approach to completing their financial reports and how to accurately calculate the amounts disbursed for project implementation.
“It’s important to understand that the timing of your financial report submissions directly affects when disbursements are released to you,” Hillary emphasised.
He further highlighted the importance of maintaining accuracy and transparency in reporting, ensuring that funds are genuinely spent for their intended purposes. Partners were also advised to pay close attention to how they file returns and the methods they use to present their financial data.
KCDF reiterated its commitment to supporting partners as they establish social enterprises aimed at improving their financial resilience. These ventures are expected to not only sustain operational costs but also generate surplus resources for reinvestment in community-driven initiatives.
As KCDF continues to champion grassroots development, such capacity-building forums remain essential in enabling local organisations to drive meaningful change, one community at a time.
