Cultivating hope in Kisumu – Pal Omega’s green hub, growing more than just onions
May 22, 2025
From 14th to 16th May 2025, KCDF participated in the 8th African Conference on Social Entrepreneurship (AACOSE8).
Under the theme “Champion the Social Economy,” this year’s conference offered an extraordinary platform for learning, collaboration, and showcasing impactful community-driven innovations.
KCDF Community partners, including Living Positive Kenya, Ecorich Solutions, Placom Manufacturers, and Farmer Lifeline Technologies, supported through the Young Environmentalist Innovation Challenge 2024, also took part in the conference, showcasing the transformative work they are doing within their localities.
These organisations had the opportunity to exhibit their products and share their stories. Their presence inspired many attendees, enabling other CSOs and participants to learn more about replicating their models within their communities.
- Living Positive Kenya showcased intricate beadwork created by the women and communities they support, primarily mothers and women affected or infected by HIV. The organisation’s mission is to empower these women through economic skills training and holistic support, enabling them to lead healthy, self-reliant lives. Their programmes also extend care and resources to orphaned and vulnerable children. Over the years, they have helped hundreds of women achieve economic independence while strengthening community resilience.
- Ecorich Solutions attracted significant attention with its innovative approach to converting organic waste into organic fertiliser. Its work promotes resource efficiency, waste reduction, and the advancement of regenerative agriculture. The variety and quality of its fertilisers on display highlighted the potential of circular economy practices in transforming farming systems and environmental sustainability.
- Placom Manufacturers transforms plastic waste into high-quality furniture and decor, showcasing how environmental conservation can go hand-in-hand with economic empowerment. By building community-based plastic waste collection networks, particularly with women and youth, Placom is driving a grassroots movement toward cleaner environments and stronger livelihoods.
- Farmer Lifeline Technologies introduced their AI-powered agricultural tools, which help farmers detect pests and diseases early, ensuring food security and promoting sustainable farming practices. Their mission is to equip farmers across the Global South with timely information that leads to healthier yields, improved nutrition, and better income stability.
These exhibitions proved what community-led innovation and enterprise can achieve when adequately supported. They embodied KCDF’s vision: building resilient, self-sufficient communities through social enterprise.
Beyond the exhibitions, KCDF was actively involved in key sessions during the conference. During a Social Finance for Social Economy panel, Kennedy Odera, KCDF’s Programme Coordinator for Capacity Building and Systems Strengthening, emphasised social enterprises’ critical role in driving community impact and promoting local development.
He highlighted the PBO Act’s crucial role in enhancing the Public Benefit Organisations (PBOs) operational framework.
KCDF, in collaboration with the SME Support Centre, hosted a dynamic MasterClass on Social Entrepreneurship to support CSO capacity further. The first session, led by Emilly Omudho, offered an immersive learning experience where participants tackled real-life scenarios related to enterprise management, crisis response, and sustainability planning.
The second session, led by Lindah Onyango of SME Support Centre, provided insights into policy alignment, subsidies, and the integration of circular economy principles into social enterprise operations.
A recurring theme throughout the sessions was the emphasis on financial sustainability, transparency, strategic leadership, and risk management—all critical to running a resilient, mission-driven organisation. Participants also explored navigating social enterprises’ diverse risks, from operational and environmental to reputational and market-based.
