February 26, 2025In Kenya, epilepsy remains one of the most misunderstood conditions, often leaving those affected isolated and marginalised. But for “Youth on the Move,” a non-profit organisation committed to empowering young people living with epilepsy, change is not just possible—it’s happening.
In their journey to implement their “Personal Development, Psychosocial Support & Business Skills & Entrepreneurship Training for Youth Living with Epilepsy and Other Neurological Disorders project,” Youth on the Move successfully mobilised over KES 1.1 million to support youth living with epilepsy. This remarkable achievement is a testament to the power of local resource mobilisation. The heart of their fundraising success lies in their collaborations and partnerships.
Youth on the Move partnered with KCDF to implement the project, as mentioned above, through the Pamoja for Change (P4C) programme. P4C is an initiative that promotes local resource mobilisation. Partners must raise 50% of the required funds, and KCDF matches the remaining amount. To enable partners to reach their goals, KCDF trains them through the Change the Game Academy courses of local resource mobilisation and mobilising support to strengthen them and expose them to a new light of resource mobilisation.
YOTM who received this training not long ago, were equipped with the skills needed to diversify their fundraising strategies, strengthen relationships with stakeholders, and ultimately ensure the project’s success. The knowledge gained from this training empowered them to raise funds and awareness about epilepsy and its challenges, paving the way for a more inclusive and understanding society.
Fundraising Strategy
From June to November 2024, Youth on the Move spearheaded a multi-faceted fundraising effort to provide critical support and training for youths living with epilepsy. With a clear and compelling mission to ensure equal participation of persons with epilepsy in society, the organization tapped into various channels to generate funds, each contributing to KES 1,131,451.
One of the organisation’s most successful fundraising efforts was through the Mchanga online platform, which allowed them to share their story and connect with generous donors. The platform alone raised KES 257,000, a significant contribution to their goal.
But Youth on the Move didn’t stop there. They also introduced a tin donation system, inviting previous beneficiaries and supporters to contribute by donating to a cause they all believed in. The tin donation initiative raised KES 112,026—proving that small contributions can make a big difference when people unite for a common cause.
Recognising the power of its alumni network, the organisation reached out to past members and board members, raising an impressive KES 520,000. Sales of T-shirts and training manuals boosted their efforts, raising another KES 177,000. Additionally, the faith community came together to support the cause, with donations from churches adding KES 50,235.
The success of the fundraising campaign can be attributed to more than just the creativity and determination of the team at Youth on the Move. With practical knowledge on resource mobilisation and fundraising strategies, Youth on the Move was able to strategically leverage their local networks, effectively engage their community, and make a meaningful impact.
