Inculcating a culture of environmental conservation and sustainable management of resources

Between 2020 and 2023, KCDF, with support from the I&M Foundation, implemented an environmental conservation project in Kilifi and Narok Counties in partnership with four implementing partners: Malindi Education and Development Foundation and A Rocha Kenya in Kilifi County and Nguzo Africa and Nkoilale Community Development Foundation, both in Narok County.

The project aimed at inculcating the spirit of environmental conservation and sustainable management of resources among children and youth and nurture them into environmental champions by enabling them to plant and care for trees. The project was implemented in learning institutions, forest areas, religious places, markets, and other community spaces.

Achievements

As at December 2022, KCDF had engaged 150 learning institutions to establish 9 tree nurseries leading to the planting of 242,410 trees in an effort to involve the youth in various schools in taking part in environmental conservation work. Further, the project saw the distribution of 135 solar lanterns and 236 energy-saving jikos to various households, with another 41 jikos being distributed to other institutions.

KCDF has continued to provide oversight and technical support to the four partners through facilitating Participatory Organisational Capacity Assessments (POCA) to gauge progress, identify institutional gaps and incorporate priority interventions.

Further, KCDF has continued to provide technical support in reporting areas, including how to undertake impact reporting, georeferencing, documentation of change stories, financial reporting, and on species selection, spacing, and watering to enhance tree growing.

We have also supported IPs in setting up county committees to help reward the learners and the schools participating in environmental conservation.
