On 31 January 2025, KCDF joined Raising Futures in launching a new kitchen project at the Seed of Hope Centre in Kangweni Community, Kitui County. The project was implemented through KCDF’s Pamoja for Change programme, where organisations raise 50% of the funds for their proposed projects where organisations raise 50% of the funds for their proposed projects, while KCDF and its partners match that amount.
Raising Futures successfully raised KES 676,980 by mobilising resources locally. Parents of students at the Seed of Hope Programme in Kangweni contributed KES 300 each, raising a total of KES 78,300. Other branches of the Seed of Hope Programme and the Board of Directors also contributed, ensuring they met their fundraising target. KCDF and TotalEnergies Marketing PLC supported them with KES 1,206,500 for the project.
Raising Futures equips vulnerable young people with employability skills in motor vehicle mechanics, fashion and fabric design, carpentry, hairdressing and beauty therapy, electrical wiring, catering and hospitality, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and computer skills.
The kitchen project aligns with KCDF’s commitment to promoting flourishing and sustainable communities. This initiative will allow residents to acquire new culinary arts, baking, and home-based hospitality skills, empowering them to improve their livelihoods and contribute to the community’s growth. The previous kitchen, a dilapidated iron-sheet structure, was inadequate for the programmes Raising Futures intended to offer.
Their new kitchen dream was realised when they connected with KCDF in 2022. They participated in KCDF’s Change the Game Academy local resource mobilisation training, pivotal in transitioning from over-reliance on foreign aid to embracing community-driven philanthropy. Through this, they learned that communities have the power to raise funds and drive their development.
During the graduation and event launch, KCDF’s Executive Director, Grace Maingi, praised the parents and students for their determination to raise funds for the project. “It’s truly inspiring to see the new facility, and it’s remarkable that parents didn’t turn to the government for help but instead used their resources to propel development, giving their children the opportunity to learn and build their futures,” she stated.
Jackson from Total Energies also congratulated the students for their dedication to improving their education and encouraged them to continue striving for success. “We believe this new project will be a key driver in advancing skills within the community, offering students opportunities for employment and self-employment,” he said.
KCDF remains committed to promoting flourishing, sustainable communities and supporting organisations like Raising Futures in their efforts to create lasting change.
